the two of us had picked up a late dinner and had driven up to carter lake (the highest campground area) to eat it/stargaze. we were looking at what appeared to be a satellite when we noticed some erratically-fluttering red and white lights in a triangle formation. a second triangle appeared. the triangle shapes could not have been unified structures, however, because several more individual lights quickly appeared, all flickering between red and white, and all (including the initial triangles) began to travel south-to-southeast while moving smoothly, slowly, in various geometric formations. we saw that a small group of people by the lake were standing and gesturing with each other at the objects as well, but they were out of earshot. as we all watched, an easily-identified airplane made its way through the sky at a lower altitude than the other crafts, unaffected. at one point, i noticed a very low-flying light that flickered red and white as the others did slowly creeping over the treeline of a nearby foothill. i could see the light from the object reflected on the trees below, but there was no sound, beam, or trail. seeing it so low to the ground made me nervous, but within a minute it crept over the hill to the other side and out of view. after watching the closer object, we lost track of the other lights. the other witnesses had appeared to shift their attention back to their campsite, so we looked around the sky for a few minutes, saw nothing there, and left.
