Point source light or burning object with unnatural jiggling motion, neither smoke nor soundI observed a fluctuating, amber-orange point nocturnal light by naked eye, roughly 60 degrees above the horizon in a WSW azimuth from my position at 42.26 deg N, 87.98 deg W. The light jiggled unnaturally, up to 1 arcsecond radial distance, in every direction around a fixed point in the sky, while fluctuating in brightness like a flame. Distance to light source estimated >500 feet by parallax method using nearby tree and building references, but could not be more precisely determined due to object gyrations and lack of distant references (no stars visible due to airborne haze reflecting city lights) – it may have been many thousands of feet in altitude. For this reason, object size also could not be determined. Observer is an engineer, pilot, military aviation and hobby rocket enthusiast, and author of a published conference paper on air-launched missiles. This is his first report. The light resembled burning wreckage, except that it had no descendi! ng trajectory and no smoke was seen. It sputtered out as if having exhausted its combustible fuel and left no visible trace. The engine sound of an unobserved jetliner was heard continuously during and after the sighting, but seemed unrelated and normal.
