Going out my rear door of apartment at 8:13 pm on 11/12/2015 I looked directly overhead at in coming air traffic to LAX landing pattern, I then noticed another set of lights moving across the traffic pattern diagonally. There were three white lights in an equilateral triangular pattern, then I noticed that there was structure between lights. The craft was moving slowly at the speed of a small prop plane (Cesna172). Halfway through its track it rotated right slightly 10º then left 20º then back to center. It also appeared that the structure enlarged slightly by 20% as I observed the white lights on the the tips of the triangular craft expand for 5 seconds and then retract back to original size. The track of the craft took it out towards the coast and I lost site of it at about 23º above horizon. The complete time of the sighting was 13 - 15 seconds.I grew up in aviation, my father was a top Aeronautical Engineer, and I have witnessed all forms of powered and unpowererd flight. I can only think of this as some sort of drone, yet their was no sound at all except for in coming aircraft to LAX, this was completely silent. The altitude estimated at 1000' to 1500'.Their were other commercial jet traffic above the craft crossing its path at one point about halfway through its track. I really can only speculate that other than a drone it is advanced U.S. Military experimental craft of some sort, or ? The craft had an almost flat dull dark grey skin. My reaction is frankly stunned and excited and left pondering what was it I saw. Weather: 59ºF. 49%Humidity, Wind NNE at 3mph Gust to 10mph, Clear, Unrestricted Ceiling. The size of the craft along one length estimated at 40' - 50', could not determine thickness.
