On news years eve, 31 Dec 2005 after returning to our cabin in Gisborne at 11pm (after only 2 drinks all night!), my Japanese girlfriend was admiring the very clear night sky and all the stars, when I looked up also and we both noticed a red glow in the sky, I said to her it's probably Mars. We were looking at it and then it started moving across the sky. It was very high up so must have been moving very quickly. It then moved in an irregular zig zag and after about 5 minuets it started to go back in the general direction that it came from, this time straight and started fading until it disappeared. We took a photo but it did not turn out. I am 45 years old and she is 39 and has studied the stars when she was younger, and we have both never seen anything like it. Everything that we tried to think it might be did not make sense. The position was south east in the sky above Gisborne. The reaction from me was just to get my girlfriend to take a photo, I did not want to take my eye off what I was seeing. Would be interested to hear if anyone else saw what we did.
