While at home our pet dog needed to go outside so I let him out and was standing on the front porch waiting. Looked up to see the stars and noticed it was cloudy and no stars were visible. Thats when I saw what looked like a large orange red planet. I get to see the night sky several times every evening when I go out with the dog and did not recall ever having seen a big orange planet before. I went inside to get my binoculars to have a better look. Observed the object for several minutes trying to figure out what it was. As I looked through the binoculars the thing dimmed then brightened strongly, twice over the course of approximately 5 minutes. It appeared 2 or 3 times larger than the planet Venus and was much brighter. The object finally moved away towards the northwest becoming just a pinpoint of light that disappeared in an instant.
