My wife and I were sitting on our south facing patio on 10/13/12. At approximately 11:30pm, A bright white extremely fast moving object traveled SE at a very high rate of speed. We weren't even looking at the sky but the brightness was so intense and the speed was so fast that it caught my eye. The object took approximately 1 to 1.5 seconds to travel from first in sight at 90 degrees overhead, to out of site over the horizon facing SE. The object appeared to be inside the atmosphere or just outside. It's very difficult to put an estimation of the objects size, as I was not able to determine distance or altitude. I wouldn't say that it had a tail or trail per say, but the intensity of the bright white light left a streak trailing the object. My wife asked me if it was a shooting star. I told her that I've seen a few shooting stars, and they never travel all the way across the sky, are never that bright, and this appeared to be closer.
