At around ten past ten on Tuesday night, January 6 2015, I stepped onto the back verandah to see what the weather was doing and to get a bit of cool night air. The moon was just starting to appear above the trees at the back of our property (to the south), there was little in the way of cloud and the stars were blazing. We are on the coast in country New South Wales; the sky here is not obscured by the glow of street lights. When I was looking at the stars, I observed what appeared to be a faint white star like dot racing across the sky (higher than commercial planes fly) - at first I concluded that it was a satellite, but than it suddenly turned to the east and swiftly moved out of view. I have never known satellites to do this before, so I am left puzzling over what this object was.
