Travelling home after work along the Calder highway from Mildura on the way to Merbein South at around 9pm. I noticed in the north west region of the sky, roughly 45 degrees, up to 4 glowing orange/red orbs of bright light. I pulled over to the side of the road to exit my car and get a good look at whatever these things were. They were all quite stationary, though it was warm clear and still night with not much breeze. The lights would diminish in brightness and fade out to a small white point of light, one by one and at different times. After only a few seconds they would flare back up again in brightness. They behaved like this for the duration of the sighting, fading in and out. The quality of light they produced was not like any landing lights on any aircraft. It was more like an energy or plasma. They didn't flicker, make any noise, or make any noticeable movements except for the disappearing and reappearing.
The colour would fluctuate from a bright orange to a deeper red depending on if they were fading out or becoming bright again.
Sometimes there would only be 1, then 3, then 2 and so on. The most I seen at once was 4 and that was only when I first noticed them while driving. Towards the end of the sighting 2 orbs had aligned themselves perfectly horizontal to each other, with a third not far from them to the left side creating a formation that resembled this:
It was at this point that I really felt quite puzzled at what I was watching. It's been a long time and haven't seen anything like it since, though others in my area have. Eventually all the orbs had faded out to not return with one that remained which seemed to be getting further and further away into the distance.
These lights definitely did not seem to be close to me by any means, and may have even been in the very upper atmosphere, maybe even in orbit.
