My boyfriend and I were driving M37 to Ludigton on 08-20-2016. Around 10:25 that evening we were about 20 minutes past Mesick. We saw 3 INSANELY bright and wide vertical light beams just APPEAR on the horizon in front of us. As if they all turned on at once. They looked like spotlights, but we couldn't find where they were coming from on the ground. We looked all around us for any kind of building/ airport/ etc. and nothing around us would have had spotlights. We were too far from any big cities or structures. We were essentially in the middle of the MNF. About ten minutes later we ended up passing them, the beams to our left, or so we thought. Another ten minutes or so had passed and we came over a hill and saw FIVE more beams just like it. It was almost like we were in a dome, and the lights were against the far side of the dome (that we were facing) and traveling up the side so they were also OVER us. They started blinking in line, starting on the left, and then we passed them for sure, and they were gone. No one behind us stopped, and neither did we. We both tried to take photos and videos of it, but although it lit up he sky, our phone screens showed nothing but blackness. But we were in the Manistee National Forest, there was nothing around that would emit that kind of light. It was pretty cloudy and dark that night, and the beams of light lit up the entire sky like it was daylight. They didn't seem to imprint on the clouds at all, like a spotlight would. And they had to have been twice as wide and so much brighter than any spotlight I've ever seen. No idea what it could have been. Thoroughly freaked me out, and I truly don't scare easily. It just didn't seem normal. If a civilian had lights that big and bright I would assume it to be illegal. I've seen plenty of ghosts in my life and had other alien-y experiences, but this one really hit me. I absolutely have no idea what it was. The first three beams looked like this coming off of the earth: \ | /The second five looked like: \ \ | / /Like I said, the second five blinked in order starting on the leftmost beam. They seemed to actually disappear as we passed them, as we could no longer see them behind us. I wonder if the other drivers behind us could see them or if it was just us. We plan on returning to investigate more.
